Angel Stadium Events

Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California (about one hour’s drive from central Los Angeles) has been home to the Los Angeles Angels (known for a time as the California Angels) since 1966, making it now the fourth-longest active serving ballpark in MLB after Fenway Park, Wrigley Field, and Dodger Stadium. Angel Stadium was also home to the Los Angeles Rams NFL football franchise from the 1980s through into early 1990s (after which the Rams left Los Angeles, only to return in 2016), which temporarily increased the capacity of the stadium to over 65,000, but was not ideal for baseball fans in terms of the viewing experience. Renovations carried out after Disney took over the team have since reduced the park’s capacity in a manner that better suits fans of the Los Angeles Angels. The improved stadium witnessed the Angels’ greatest-ever triumph in 2002, when the team not only surged through the postseason to claim their first-ever American League pennant but actually went one better, defeating their local California rivals the San Francisco Giants in seven games to win the World Series. It was a tense series, with three games decided by only a single run and a Game Seven at Angel Stadium that saw the Angels hang on to a 4-1 lead through six straight scoreless innings to celebrate their first-ever triumph in front of their home fans. Recent years at Angel Stadium have seen huge numbers of Japanese fans at every Angels home game to see Japanese superstar Shohei “Shotime” Ohtani, one of the most uniquely talented baseball players in MLB history due to his All-Star abilities both as a hitter and pitcher, a skill set described best in Ohtani’s own native language of Japanese by the expression ni-to ryu (二刀流): literally, “able to wield two swords.” Sadly for Angels fans, since the end of the 2023 season, Ohtani has taken his double act across town, becoming a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers for the upcoming season. The former Angels hero will return to play a spring training game for the Dodgers against his old team in March 2024, which will no doubt be a bittersweet night for all involved. As for the park itself, Angel Stadium is best known for its iconic, if rather campy, entrance, which features two oversized domed baseball caps. One cannot help but notice the aesthetic influence of the Disney Corporation. Along with all regular season and playoff Angels home games, Angel Stadium occasionally hosts large concerts, international soccer matches, and motorsports events. Given its proximity to Hollywood, the stadium also appears in quite a number of high-profile films. Showing up hungry to Angel Stadium is no problem at all, with plenty of delicious treats to be found including bourbon maple BBQ fried sandwiches, savory mac and cheese, and carne asada nachos. Shops and kiosks all around the ballpark hawk team and event merchandise featuring the iconic Angels colors and logo.
