Situated in Bethel, New York, on the site of the 1969 Woodstock Music & Art Fair, the Bethel Woods complex for the Arts is a multifaceted cultural hub that includes a museum, performing arts complex, and amphitheater. This 800-acre complex, which is roughly 90 miles from New York City, has a 15,000-seat outdoor performance venue, a 1,000-seat outdoor terrace stage, an inside hall with 440 seats, and the Museum at Bethel Woods, which hosts educational events and concerts featuring a wide range of musical genres from June to September. The facility was established in 1996 by Alan Gerry under the auspices of the Gerry Foundation with the goal of reviving the Sullivan County economy, which had suffered following the collapse of the Borscht Belt tourism in the Catskills. Before the arts complex was built, the site, which was first acquired that year, was the scene of celebrations honoring Woodstock's anniversaries. With performances that paid homage to its historic origins, the DLR Group-designed arts complex opened its doors in 2006. Construction on the facility started in 2004. Launched in 2006, the Museum at Bethel Woods explores the cultural upheaval of the 1960s, the 1969 Woodstock event, and the decade's lasting legacy through multimedia presentations and interactive displays. It attempts to give a thorough grasp of the influence of the 1960s by covering important events, fashion, music, and political protest.
