Home Teams: Villanova Wildcats (NCAA College Basketball)
Located in Villanova, essentially a suburb of Philadelphia, Finneran Pavilion has been home to the Villanova Wildcats men’s and women’s basketball teams since it first opened in 1986. The Wildcats men’s basketball team is quite the success story, punching well above its weight nationally for decades in spite of representing a quiet and relatively small Catholic university. The Wildcats have qualified for no less than 40 March Madness postseason tournaments, progressing 19 times into the Sweet 16 and then onto the Elite 8 on 15 of those occasions. The Wildcats have appeared 6 times in the NCAA Final Four, from which they continued on to 4 championship finals. The Wildcats lost the first final in 1971, but have won all three since, in 1985, 2016, and 2018, with 2016 being the most dramatic, won 77-74 over the North Carolina Tar Heels with a buzzer-beating three pointer from Kris Jenkins. The game is often described as one of the best NCAA finals of all time. Aside from basketball games, Finneran Pavilion also hosts conventions, trade shows, and concerts, including the annual Hoops Mania concert in fall to jumpstart the basketball season. Past performers at Hoops Mania include Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross, Wiz Khalifa, 50 Cent, and Drake.
*Note: due to the Wildcats’ national fame and small home arena, some of the team’s home games are now held at nearby Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, home to the NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers and NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers.
Due to local pride in the team’s considerable success over the years and the comparatively small size* of Finneran Pavilion, scoring a ticket to a Villanova Wildcats basketball game can feel like opening a chocolate bar and seeing that flash of gold.
