The North Carolina Tar Heels are one of the most storied teams in all of NCAA college basketball. Aside from all the team’s victories and records, however (we’ll get back to those in a minute!), the North Carolina Tar Heels will forever remain synonymous with the legendary Michael Jordan, widely regarded as the greatest basketball player of all time. Jordan reportedly arrived in Chapel Hill in his freshman year as a rather raw and unpolished guard, but the legendary coach Dean Smith (for whom the Dean Smith Center is now named) saw the young man’s desire to improve and pushed Jordan to improve his game. In 1982, Jordan paid his trust back, draining a last-minute game-winning basket (as would later become his trademark in the NBA Playoffs!) to help the Tar Heels defeat the Georgetown Hoyas 63-62 and win their second-ever national NCAA March Madness national championship (and first since 1957). Along with ranking third in all-time wins (2294) and second in all-time winning percentage (.735) among all NCAA basketball teams, the Tar Heels have qualified for the NCAA postseason March Madness tournament 51 times, registering a record 133 tournament game wins. The team has appeared in the Final Four a record 21 times, reaching the final championship game on 12 of those occasions where they have a .500 record, losing 6 (most recently in 2022) but winning the other 6 (most recently in 2017) to bring their NCAA championships total to 6 (third behind the UCLA Bruins and Kentucky Wildcats). 2023-24 was a huge disappointment, however, with the Tar Heels finishing top of their conference to storm back to March Madness as the top seed, only to lose a heartbreaker to Alabama in the Sweet 16 by 89-87 (while upstart state rivals the NC State Wolfpack got to the Final!). Get your North Carolina Tar Heels basketball tickets from TicketX today to see if they can win it all in 2024-25!
Despite being home to such a big team as the Tar Heels, the Dean Smith Center has received criticism in the past as lacking in atmosphere. Critics have attributed this to what they term the “cheese and wine” crowd comprised of older alumni fans who tend to have seats in the lower levels of the stadium (and often don’t turn up at all), relegating the more raucous student cheering sections into the upper tiers. The university has attempted to improve the situation by creating a student seating area behind one of the baskets. Regardless, the Smith Center still seems to confer a considerable home court advantage on the Tar Heels, with the team having posted just one losing season at home in all their years at the venue.
A basketball team with six national titles to its name that can boast the greatest player of all time among the ranks of its alumni is always going to end up irking the fans, players, and coaches of plenty of other teams. As well as a local state rivalry with the NC State Wolfpack (which stands at a rather overwhelming all-time 164–80 record in favor of the Tar Heels), the North Carolina Tar Heels have long considered the Duke Blue Devils from nearby Durham, North Carolina, to be their most serious rivals. With just 10 miles separating the two teams and plenty of spice added by the fact that North Carolina is a public university while Duke is a private college, along with the proud history and strong records of both teams, this rivalry has been described as one of the most intense college rivalries in all of American college sport. While the overall series stands at 144-117 in favor of the Tar Heels, revenge will be on UNC minds in 2024 after suffering a 94-93 to the Blue Devils in 2023.
