The small city of Provo, Utah might not be where most hoops fans would expect to find one of the largest college basketball venues in America, but if you head to the city’s campus of Brigham Young University (BYU), that is exactly what you will find. Built in 1971, the Marriott Center could actually hold nearly 23,000, but renovations in recent years reduced this number to its current capacity of around 18,000 fans. The Marriott Center is home to the BYU Cougars men’s and women’s basketball teams, though it also serves as a spiritual center for the university, frequently hosting large religious ceremonies. The BYU Cougars men’s basketball team have been quite successful through the decades, qualifying for 29 NCAA March Madness postseason basketball tournaments, in which they have made it to the Sweet 16 on 7 occasions and the Elite 8 on 3. The team has never made it further than this stage, but with a switch to the more competitive Big 12 Conference starting in 2023-24, hopes are riding high that a breakthrough could be just around the corner.
