Upstate Medical Arena (originally known as Onondaga County War Memorial and later as the Oncenter War Memorial Arena) is a multi-purpose arena located in Syracuse, New York. It is part of the Oncenter Complex. Upstate Medical Arena is significant as an example of a World War I, World War II and Aroostook War commemorative and as "an early and sophisticated example of single-span thin-shell concrete roof construction." The Upstate Medical Arena serves as the home arena for the Syracuse Crunch ice hockey team and has a rich history hosting various sports events, concerts, and other entertainment activities. The arena has been home to several professional sports teams, including the NBA's Syracuse Nationals, NLL's Syracuse Smash, and MASL's Syracuse Silver Knights. It gained further recognition by hosting significant events such as the NBA All-Star Game in 1961 and the NCAA Frozen Four in 1967 and 1971. The War Memorial also played a pivotal role in the 1954-55 NBA Finals, where the Syracuse Nationals clinched the championship title in a decisive Game 7. In addition to sports, the arena has been featured in popular culture, notably in the 1977 film "Slap Shot." It has also been a venue for professional wrestling events, including hosting the WCW World Heavyweight Championship match won by actor David Arquette in 2000. The War Memorial Arena is not only known for its sporting events but also as a prominent concert venue. It has hosted performances by legendary artists such as Queen, KISS, Bruce Springsteen, and Elvis Presley. Furthermore, it was a significant stop on Bob Dylan's electric tour in 1965. The arena has undergone modernization efforts, including the installation of LED lighting in 2012. It also holds significance as a venue dedicated to honoring service veterans, with the words "In memory of our service veterans" displayed on its stage.
