AFI (A Fire Inside) are an American rock band from Ukiah, California, formed in November 1991 by vocalist Davey Havok, guitarist Mark Stopholese, bassist Vic Chalker, and drummer Adam Carson — all high school students who initially knew nothing about playing instruments. Havok and Carson are the only original remaining members, with the classic lineup stabilizing in 1998 when Jade Puget joined on guitar and Hunter Burgan on bass. Beginning as a Northern California hardcore punk band, AFI evolved profoundly across twelve studio albums — through horror punk, post-hardcore, emo, gothic rock, new wave, and alternative rock. Their DreamWorks major-label debut Sing the Sorrow (2003) — produced by Butch Vig and Jerry Finn — peaked at number five on the Billboard 200, driven by "Girl's Not Grey" and "Silver and Cold." Their seventh album Decemberunderground (2006, Interscope) debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and spawned the chart-topping "Miss Murder." Subsequent albums include Crash Love (2009), Burials (2013), AFI/The Blood Album (2017), Bodies (2021), and Silver Bleeds the Black Sun (2025). Havok and Puget also record as electronic duo Blaqk Audio.
