Alvvays, which is pronounced Always, is an indie pop group from Canada. The group, which originated from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, got together in 2011 and then based itself in Toronto, Ontario. They released their self-titled debut album in 2014 and it topped the college charts in the U.S. Their second studio album came out in 2017 and their third in 2022. The second and third albums both won Juno Awards for Alternative Album of the Year. And, “Belinda Says” was nominated for a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Performance. The group’s singer/songwriter, Molly Rankin, is the daughter of John Morris Rankin, a fiddler with The Rankin Family, the Celtic folk family collective. Once the band gathered, they secured jobs that allowed occasional touring and eventually got signed to a record label. Their style has been described as a jangle pop, but Rankin says they concentrate on strong melodies instead of specific genres.
