Cracker is an American rock band formed in Richmond, Virginia, in 1990 by vocalist and guitarist David Lowery and guitarist Johnny Hickman, emerging from the ashes of Lowery's previous band Camper Van Beethoven. Known for a sound that moves fluidly between alternative rock, Americana, country, and punk, Cracker broke through with their self-titled debut album (1992), which featured the hit single "Teen Angst (What the World Needs Now)." Their second album Kerosene Hat (1993) became an instant alt-rock classic, producing the singles "Low" and "Get Off This" and establishing Cracker as one of the defining acts of the early-1990s alternative rock boom. Over a career spanning more than three decades, the band has released nine studio albums, including The Golden Age (1996), Gentleman's Blues (1998), Forever (2002), Countrysides (2006), and Berkeley to Bakersfield (2014). Their devoted fanbase, known as Crumbs, has sustained them through extensive touring across North America. Lowery, who holds a doctorate from the University of Georgia and lectures in music business, is also celebrated as a prominent advocate for artists' rights in the streaming era.
