The Maryland Terrapins basketball team (known affectionately as the Terps) rose to national prominence in the late 1980s and early 1990s, emerging from their conference to qualify more often for the NCAA March Madness postseason tournament. The Terps’ big breakthrough would come in 2001, when the team progressed for the first time to the Final Four, losing 95-84 to the Duke Blue Devils, who would go on to win the tournament. The Terrapins roared right back in 2002, going one better than the year before by downing the Kansas Jayhawks in the semifinals before defeating the Indiana Hoosiers in the championship final to bring a first ever NCAA basketball title home to Maryland. The team has continued to improve in recent years, with fans looking forward to a strong showing in 2024.
Xfinity Center is a large and attractive venue that attracts large crowds for Terrapins games, particularly postseason tournament games, key conference deciders, or rivalry matchups (see below), which are known to sell out. The Maryland Terrapins have a large number of intense rivalries, due in part to their central geographical location in the East near several historically strong teams. Their rivalries with the North Carolina Tar Heels and Georgetown Hoyas are probably the most heated, particularly with the Tar Heels after some quite spicy exchanges between their coaches during a scandal in 2017. The Terrapins have played some particularly tough games against the Michigan Wolverines and Michigan State Spartans in recent years, building up a rivalry with those teams. Historic rivalries with the Duke Blue Devils and Virginia Cavaliers have sadly gone dormant due to conference realignment but will hopefully resume again in the future.
The Xfinity Center in College Park is known for having a wild atmosphere for Terrapins home games, thanks in no small part to its student cheering section, The Wall, which assembles behind one of the baskets.
