The New York Red Bulls is one of the 10 surviving founding members of MLS in 1996, though the team was known as the New York/New Jersey MetroStars until 2006. As part of their multi-club ownership strategy (including Red Bull Leipzig in Germany and Red Bull Salzburg in Austria), Red Bull purchased the MetroStars in 2006, rebranding them as Red Bull New York, which soon became the New York Red Bulls as this sounded more natural to American sports fans and commentators. Despite their longevity in the league, the New York Red Bulls have never been one of the MLS’s strongest teams. The team has never won an MLS Cup or USL Cup, though they have been to three finals, losing the 2008 MLS Cup Final 3-1 to the Columbus Crew and both USL Cup Finals, in 2003 and 2017, by the same scoreline of 2-1 to Sporting Kansas City. The Red Bulls have fared a bit better in regular season play, finishing 1st in the Eastern Conference on six occasions and claiming 3 Supporters’ Shields. Recent seasons, however, have witnessed a decline in the team’s fortunes on the field, with five First Round playoff exits in the past five seasons. Heading into 2024, New York Red Bulls fans will be hoping that talents like Juan Gutierrez, Ibrahim Kasule, Dylan Sullivan, and Rafael Mosquera can lead them to that championship that they have sought in vain for nearly three decades.
