The New England Revolution are one of the ten surviving clubs that helped to found the MLS in 1996, though they did not enjoy much success in those early years, qualifying for the MLS Playoffs just twice in their first six seasons. The Revolution then entered the biggest purple patch in their history between 2002 and 2007, finishing first in the Eastern Conference twice, with 6 appearances in the Semifinals of the MLS Playoffs in just 6 seasons leading to 4 appearances in the MLS Cup Final. Unfortunately for the Revolution and their fans, all 4 of these Finals ended in bitter disappointment, beginning with back to back 1-0 losses to the LA Galaxy followed by a pair of defeats at the hands of Houston Dynamo FC (including one on penalties). The Revolution at least managed to win their first ever trophy when they claimed the US Open Cup in 2007. Their fans probably figured it would only be a matter of time before their team would have another shot at the MLS Cup again, and indeed they were back in the Final in 2014, where they met their old nemesis, the LA Galaxy, led by Irish superstar Robbie Keane, who scored the winner in extra time to put the Revolution to the sword 2-1 for the team’s 5th straight defeat in an MLS Cup Final. Since then, the team has gone through some lean years, although they did manage to win the Supporters’ Shield in 2021 for finishing first in the regular season. This was some small consolation to Revolution fans, but the trophy they really want is the MLS Cup, which they will hope to see coming home to New England in 2024!

New England Revolution Soccer Rivalries

The New England Revolution have a big local rivalry with the New York Red Bulls based on the intense multi-sport rivalry between the cities of Boston and New York (Celtics-Knicks, Red Sox-Yankees, Jets-Patriots). Revolution fans are also none too enamored with upstarts New York City FC, who knocked their team out of the playoffs in 2021 after the Revolution had been the best regular season team in the league. Numerous exciting playoff battles with Chicago Fire FC and D.C. United from the earliest days of MLS have also created rivalries between those teams and the Revolution.

Are New England Revolution soccer games exciting?

New England Revolution games are an absolute blast on and off the field. Supporters groups known as the Midnight Riders (a reference to the American Revolution) and the Rebellion pump up the crowd from a section called “The Fort” and a group of Revolutionary War reenactors in full time period costumes shoot off muskets whenever the home team scores a goal! If you are in New England, get yourself tickets to a Revolution game from TicketX as soon as possible!
