CF Montréal kicked off their first MLS game in 2012 as the Montreal Impact, the name under which they had played in the lower divisions of North American soccer for many years. The team revamped itself in 2021 as Club de Foot Montréal, shortened simply to CF Montréal in the years since. On the pitch, CF Montréal have had rather middling fortunes throughout their years in MLS thus far, with their best showing in the MLS Playoffs coming in 2016 when they reached the Eastern Conference Final (MLS Playoffs Semifinals), losing out to their Canadian rivals Toronto FC in extra time. Through the years, CF Montréal has actually seen more success in the Canadian Championship, winning the title once before joining MLS and 4 times since. This has earned the team a berth in the CONCACAF Champions League (now the CONCACAF Champions Cup), in which they have done quite well, the highlight being a run to the Final in 2015, in which they were defeated by Mexico’s Club América over two legs by an aggregate of 5-3. In 2023, in characteristic fashion, CF Montréal finished 10th in the Eastern Conference, missing out on the MLS Playoffs for the fourth time in five years, but defeated archrivals Toronto FC 1-0 to claim their fifth Canadian Championship and thus qualify again for the CONCACAF Champions League. CF Montréal fans will be hoping that new additions Matías Cóccaro, Josef Martínez, and Raheem Edwards will help the team match these cup successes in the league and get back into the MLS Playoffs in 2024.

In Canada, hockey is still above all other sports and so obviously the greatest NHL hockey rivalry of all time, that between the Montreal Canadiens and. Toronto Maple Leafs, spills over into soccer. CF Montréal and Toronto FC’s rivalry, known as the Canadian Classique, hails all the way back to the original NASL in the 1980s, but has intensified in recent years in the MLS with the two teams meeting frequently, not just in the regular season but in the MLS Playoffs and Canadian Championship. CF Montréal has been known to hold games between the two in the aging but large Stade Olympique, where they set a Canadian record in 2016 with 61,004 fans gathered to watch the second leg of CF Montréal-Toronto FC MLS Playoff Semifinal, which CF Montréal lost, painfully, in extra time. CF Montréal also has rivalries with fellow Canadians the Vancouver Whitecaps as well as the New York Red Bulls.
CF Montréal fans, spurred on by supporters groups like 127 Montréal and 1642 MTL, are known for their colorful displays featuring banners and flags as well as for generating plenty of noise. As reflects the bilingual, multicultural nature of the city, you will hear plenty of singing throughout the game in both French and English. Recently, a large supporters group known as Collectif Impact Montréal has been gathering behind one of the goals to rev up their team (and wind up opposing goalkeepers…). If you’re new to it all, don’t worry; just jump up and shout “Allez!”
