NRBQ (an acronym for New Rhythm and Blues Quartet) is an American rock band founded circa 1965 in Shively, Kentucky, by pianist and keyboardist Terry Adams, the band's lone constant member across six decades. Originally the New Rhythm and Blues Quintet, NRBQ first performed on stage in 1966 and relocated to Miami, Florida, before moving to New Jersey and New York City in search of a record deal. Their self-titled debut album was released on Columbia Records in 1969, followed by Boppin' the Blues (1970), featuring rockabilly legend Carl Perkins. The band's most celebrated and stable incarnation from 1974 to 1994 consisted of Adams alongside guitarist Al Anderson, bassist Joey Spampinato, and drummer Tom Ardolino. Known for a spectacularly encyclopedic style spanning rock, pop, jazz, blues, country, and R&B, Rolling Stone's Michael Azerrad described them as "spectacularly encyclopedic." The band has maintained a devoted cult following whose members include Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt, Paul McCartney, Keith Richards, and Matt Groening.
