Pavement are an American indie rock band formed in Stockton, California, in January 1989 by guitarist-vocalist Stephen Malkmus — who had just returned home after studying history at the University of Virginia — and childhood friend guitarist-vocalist Scott Kannberg, known as "S.M." and "Spiral Stairs." Initially a lo-fi studio project, their debut EP Slay Tracks: 1933–1969 was recorded for $800 at Louder Than You Think, the home studio of local drummer Gary Young — who declared upon hearing the duo: "this Malkmus idiot is a complete songwriting genius." Their early EPs attracted underground attention from BBC DJ John Peel while the band released no press materials or photographs. By 1992 they expanded to include bassist Mark Ibold, percussionist Bob Nastanovich, and eventually drummer Steve West, releasing Slanted and Enchanted — widely recognized as one of the most influential indie rock albums of the decade. Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain (1994) produced their only mainstream hit "Cut Your Hair," performed on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Three further albums — Wowee Zowee (1995), Brighten the Corners (1997), and Terror Twilight (1999, produced by Nigel Godrich) — followed before the band disbanded with acrimony. Credited with defining the modern indie rock sound and epitomizing 1990s slacker culture, they were called the best band of the decade by critics Robert Christgau and Stephen Thomas Erlewine. They reunited for a celebrated 2010 tour and a second international reunion from 2022 to 2024.
