Placebo are a British alternative rock band formed in London in 1994 by vocalist-guitarist Brian Molko — born in Belgium, raised in Luxembourg — and bassist-guitarist Stefan Olsdal, born in Göteborg, Sweden, also raised in Luxembourg. Both had attended the American International School of Luxembourg without crossing paths, meeting only by chance outside South Kensington tube station in 1994. They briefly formed a lo-fi duo called Ashtray Heart before recruiting drummer Robert Schultzberg and becoming Placebo. Their self-titled debut (1996, Caroline Records, produced by Brad Wood) peaked at number five on the UK Albums Chart and featured "Nancy Boy" — whose gender-bending themes attracted David Bowie, who invited the band to his 50th birthday concert at Madison Square Garden in 1997. Schultzberg was replaced by Steve Hewitt. Signed to Virgin Records, Without You I'm Nothing (1998) featured a title-track duet with Bowie recorded at his personal request. Black Market Music (2000) reached number one in France and number six in the UK; Sleeping with Ghosts (2003) cracked the UK Top Ten. Hewitt departed in 2007, replaced by Steve Forrest; since Forrest's departure in 2015, Placebo have operated as a duo. All eight studio albums — including Never Let Me Go (2022) — have reached the UK Top 20, and the band has sold around 14 million records worldwide. In April 2026 they announced Placebo RE:CREATED, a remake of their debut due June 2026.
