SOiL (stylized as SOiL) is an American alternative metal and hard rock band formed in Chicago, Illinois, in 1997. Originally founded by members of death metal acts Oppressor and Broken Hope as a side project, the band's current lineup consists of Ryan McCombs (vocals), Tim King (bass), Adam Zadel (guitar), and TJ Taylor (drums), with King and Zadel the only members to have remained with the band since its inception. The band gained its break when "Halo" received heavy radio rotation at Orlando rock station WJRR, triggering a major label bidding war won by J Records, where music industry legend Clive Davis personally signed them and declared they would be his priority rock act. The band became the first rock group signed to J Records and released their major label debut Scars on September 11, 2001, which reached number 193 on the Billboard 200 and featured the singles "Halo" and "Unreal." Their second major label album Redefine followed in 2004. After McCombs's departure and return, the band has continued releasing music, including True Self (2006), Picture Perfect (2009), Whole (2013), and most recently covers album Play It Forward (2022) and studio album Restoration (2023). SOiL has sold over two million albums worldwide and is known for hit singles including "Halo," "Unreal," "Redefine," "The Lesser Man," and "Shine On."
