With a seating capacity of 8,500, it opened for the 2020–21 NCAA Division I basketball season, replacing the JMU Convocation Center as the primary venue for the university's basketball games. The arena's naming rights are held by Atlantic Union Bank. The center marked its opening on November 25, 2020, with victories from both the men's and women's basketball teams against Limestone University and Mount St. Mary's University, respectively. Furthermore, it played a pivotal role in collegiate basketball by hosting the 2021 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) men's basketball tournament. This event was relocated to Harrisonburg from Washington, D.C., in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting the arena's ability to accommodate significant sporting events under challenging circumstances. The tournament concluded with Drexel University emerging as the champions.
