Home Teams: Houston Dynamo FC (MLS)
Destiny has had a cruel sense of humor when it comes to Shell Energy Stadium, with this beautiful soccer-specific venue becoming the home ground of Houston Dynamo FC in 2012, a few years after the soccer team’s greatest triumphs thus far. It is a visually striking stadium with its rows of red seats cast against the verdant green grass and big open Texas sky, along with Houston’s skyline visible above the stands. Houston Dynamo FC joined MLS in 2006 and missed the memo on expansion teams needing to struggle, taking their very first MLS Playoffs in their very first season by storm, surging all the way to the MLS Cup Final where they defeated the New England Revolution on penalties to lift the trophy. Just to show everyone that it was not an accident, the Dynamo repeated their success in 2007, quashing the Revolution 2-1 in a rematch of the previous year’s final. Unfortunately for Houston soccer fans, neither Final was played in their city, as the MLS Cup Final was formerly played in a neutral pre-determined venue (like the Super Bowl), though at least the 2006 Final was in Texas (Dallas). Houston Dynamo FC also finished first in the Western Conference in 2008, narrowly missing out on the Supporters’ Shield. Since moving into Shell Energy Stadium in 2012, however, the team’s only slice of glory has been a US Open Cup in 2018, with two MLS Cup Finals lost back to back in 2011 and 2012 (1-0 and 3-1 to David Beckham and the LA Galaxy). Houston Dynamo FC fans have remained loyal, however, turning up in their thousands to will their team on towards victory with plenty of color and singing. Hungry visitors to Shell Energy Stadium will find lots of delicious treats to sample, with concessions featuring everything from smokehouse BBQ and Vinny’s pizza to vegan burgers and taqueria-style tacos. Plenty of excellent craft beer is also available. For Houston Dynamo FC merchandise, head to one of the venue’s many shops and kiosks.
As well as Houston Dynamo FC soccer games, Shell Energy Stadium is also home to the NCAA’s Texas Southern Tigers college football team. Rugby and Gaelic football have also been played at the stadium. Several international soccer games have been held at the venue including a World Cup qualifier for the Mexico National Soccer Team as well as games with the U.S. Men's and U.S. Women’s National Soccer Teams. The venue hosted its first concert in January 2024 with a free concert featuring Jake Owen, Megan Moroney, Jon Pardi, Kidz Bop, and headliner Jack Harlow. No other concerts or music festivals are scheduled at Shell Energy Stadium for 2024 yet, but keep your eye on TicketX, as this is sure to change soon!
