Capacity: 18,500
Home Teams: Philadelphia Union (MLS)
Subaru Park is an attractive open air soccer-specific stadium along the banks of the Delaware River in Philadelphia that has been home to the Philadelphia Union since the team joined the MLS in 2010. The stadium was actually the first step in the city’ plan towards revitalization and redevelopment of its riverfront area. Attendances have been so consistently high at Union games that the team is considering expanding the capacity of Subaru Park up to 30,000 in the near future. The Union themselves have struggled to live up to their supporters’ enthusiasm through the years, slipping in and out of the playoffs and failing to progress further than a quarterfinal until 2021, when they finally reached an Eastern Conference Final (semifinal). The Union were thwarted on that occasion by eventual champions New York City FC, but managed to go one step further in 2022, reaching their first MLS Cup Final only to lose on penalties after a 3-3 game against Gareth Bale’s Los Angeles FC. The team has also finished runners-up in three U.S. Open Cup Finals. Having been so close to their first real trophy on four occasions, loyal Philadelphia Union fans continue to pack Subaru Park in their thousands, including supporters groups like the Sons of Ben, who played a key role in founding the team, as well as the Corner Creeps, La Union Latina, and Chester Soccer Casuals, who really pump the atmosphere up on game days with their coordinated singing and chanting. Hungry visitors to Subaru Park will find lots of delicious treats to sample, with concessions featuring everything from smokehouse BBQ and Vinny’s pizza to vegan burgers and taqueria-style tacos. Plenty of excellent craft beer is also available. For Philadelphia Union merchandise, head to one of the venue’s many shops and kiosks.
As well as Philadelphia Union soccer games, Subaru Park is also known for hosting college soccer, lacrosse, college football, and high level international rugby games featuring English Premier League teams and the New Zealand All-Blacks. The venue is well set up for concerts with a concert stage built into the River End, with two major rock concerts held at the venue in 2015 and 2016 featuring The Offspring, Korn, Alice in Chains, Slayer, Papa Roach, and Rob Zombie, among many others.
