As one of the founding members of Mexican professional soccer over a hundred years ago, Club America is easily the most successful soccer team in the country’s history. Based in Mexico City and playing their home games at the iconic Estadio Azteca (the venue for two World Cup Finals), Club America has a massive and passionate fanbase both in Mexico and amongst expat Mexican communities in the United States. For this reason, Club America has been known to pull in huge crowds when they tour the USA in their off-season (they will play Chelsea on July 31, 2014, in Atlanta at Mercedes-Benz Stadium and Aston Villa on August 3, 2014, in Chicago at Soldier Field) or play against MLS teams in continental tournaments like the Leagues Cup or CONCACAF Champions Cup. With over a hundred years of history behind them, Club America has had plenty of time to develop enmity with other clubs! Here are two of Club America’s most significant rivalries.
Known as El Súper Clásico, the rivalry between Club America and Guadalajara is without a doubt the biggest soccer rivalry in Mexico and is often accounted one of the biggest in the world. As well as being the two most historically successful soccer teams in the country, Club America and Guadalajara represent different values, with Club America known for flashing cash and buying expensive foreign players, while Guadalajara has a policy of only fielding Mexican players. Both teams have huge fanbases in the United States and Mexico. The 2024 Apertura will see Club America and Guadalajara play once on September 15 at Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes in Mexico City. They may meet again later in the 2025 Clausura as well.
The rivalry between Club America and Club Universidad Nacional is a local Mexico City derby dubbed the Clásico Capitalino that really got going in 1962 after Club Universidad Nacional was first promoted to the top division. In Mexico, the Clásico Capitalino goes beyond soccer and is seen as a battle between the wealthy (Club America) and the middle class (Club Universidad Nacional). The 2024 Apertura will see one meeting between Club America and Club Universidad Nacional at Estadio Azteca on September 29. They could meet again later in the 2025 Clausura as well.

The 2024 Club America preseason takes place in the summer months of 2024, with the team playing several friendly matches to get ready for the 2024-25 Liga MX season, which begins in July. Club America preseason games have been known to take place in the United States or other countries, and occasionally even occur during the Liga MX season to accommodate the European and English off-season (as with Club America’s exhibition friendly matches against Chelsea at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on July 31, 2014, and Aston Villa on August 3, 2014, in Chicago at Soldier Field). The 2024-25 Liga MX season begins with the Apertura (July to December) followed by the Clausura (January to May). There are thus potentially two champions each season in Mexican football (though Club America won an Apertura-Clausura double last season).
Here are the details for the upcoming Club America events.

A whopping total of 18 teams—nine from the Eastern Conference and nine from the Western Conference—will qualify for the 2024 MLS Cup Playoffs, with seven from each conference (places 1-7) automatically qualifying for Round 1. The 8th and 9th place teams play in a single-elimination Wild Card match, with the winner advancing to Round 1 to play the top-seeded team in each conference
This new MLS Cup Playoff format was introduced last year, so more than half of the league’s current 29 teams will be playing at least one game in the Postseason.
In this current 2024 MLS season, which began on February 29, Lionel Messi and Inter Miami CF had the best record in the league (9-4-2) with 31 points, followed closely by their Eastern Conference counterparts, FC Cincinnati (9-3-2), who were sitting on 30 points at this writing.
In the Western Conference, upstart Real Salt Lake (8-4-2) sat atop the standings with 28 points, followed by Minnesota United, Austin FC, LA Galaxy, LAFC, Colorado Rapids, and the Vancouver Whitecaps, all clubs with positive goal differentials.
Expect Inter Miami CF, FC Cincinnati, NYCFC, New York Red Bulls, Toronto FC, the defending champion Columbus Crew, and the Philadelphia Union to qualify for the automatic playoff spots in the Eastern Conference. Atlanta United, Charlotte FC, Orlando SC, and Nashville SC will fight it out for the two Wild Card spots.
In the Western Conference, RSL, Minnesota United FC, Austin FC, LA Galaxy, LAFC, the Colorado Rapids, and the Vancouver Whitecaps all look on track to earn automatic postseason berths with the Seattle Sounders, Houston Dynamo, Portland Timbers, and St. Louis City FC to battle it out for the two Wild Card spots in the West.
The 2024 MLS Regular Season will wrap up on Saturday, October 19, with Decision Day. The 2024 MLS Cup Playoffs will begin in late October and run until Saturday, December 7, when the 2024 MLS Cup will be held.
The Columbus Crew are the defending MLS champions, having defeated LAFC 2-1 in the 2023 MLS Cup. So, can we expect a new MLS champion from this ongoing season? It seems so, although you can never really count the Crew out, winners of three MLS Cups.
But with sparkplug and living legend Messi (10 goals), the addition of Luis Suárez (11 goals) and Matías Rojas, and guys like Sergio Busquets and GK Drake Callender, anything short of an Eastern Conference Finals appearance seems like falling short for Inter Miami CF, who oddsmakers have tabbed to win the MLS Cup (+200, DraftKings).
Should Inter Miami CF face FC Cincinnati (10/1) in the Eastern Conference Finals, it won’t be easy for Messi & Company, but this team seems hungry to win the 2024 MLS Cup. The Western Conference seems much wider open, with RSL, LAFC, and even the LA Galaxy capable of winning the conference and making the 2024 MLS Cup.
An RSL-LAFC Western Conference Final is possible this season, and with a little more scoring power, LAFC (+850 to win the 2024 MLS Cup) should top RSL (9/1), but it won’t come easy. So, an Inter Miami CF-LAFC 2024 MLS Cup could be in the works, and betting against any team with magician Messi on it seems silly.
2024 MLS Cup Prediction: Inter Miami CF 3 LAFC 1
