About Extreme

Extreme is an American hard rock band formed in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1985, consisting of Gary Cherone (vocals), Nuno Bettencourt (guitar), Pat Badger (bass), and Kevin Figueiredo (drums). Known for blending hard rock, funk metal, and pop songcraft — describing their sound in their early days as "Funky Metal" — the band achieved mainstream success with their second album Extreme II: Pornograffitti (1990), which reached number ten on the Billboard 200 and went double platinum in the United States. The album produced two signature hits: "More Than Words," an acoustic ballad that reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, and "Hole Hearted," which reached number four. Their ambitious third album III Sides to Every Story (1992) followed, and the band performed at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert that same year. After releasing Waiting for the Punchline (1995), the band dissolved in 1996. Gary Cherone subsequently joined Van Halen as lead vocalist for the 1998 album Van Halen III. The band reunited in 2004 and released Saudades de Rock in 2008, followed by a long hiatus. Their sixth album Six, produced by Nuno Bettencourt and released on June 9, 2023, via earMUSIC, was inspired in part by the death of Eddie Van Halen and marked a triumphant return to hard rock. The band has sold over ten million albums worldwide. Bettencourt is also celebrated as one of rock's most technically accomplished guitarists, having served as musical director for Rihanna's 2023 Super Bowl halftime show.
