Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly was an American soul, R&B, and funk band founded in Philadelphia in 1970 by singer, songwriter, and producer Frankie Beverly — born Howard Stanley Beverly on December 6, 1946, in Philadelphia — originally under the name Raw Soul. After relocating to San Francisco in 1971 and coming to the attention of Marvin Gaye, who became a mentor and helped them secure a deal with Capitol Records, Gaye suggested they change their name to Maze. Their self-titled debut album (1977) went gold and featured "Happy Feelin's" and "While I'm Alone." Maze went on to release nine gold albums between 1977 and 1993, becoming one of the most beloved live acts in Black American music — known for their signature all-white attire and anthems including "Before I Let Go," "Joy and Pain," "Golden Time of Day," and "Southern Girl." Beverly retired in 2023 and passed away on September 10, 2024, at age 77. The band continues as Maze Honoring Frankie Beverly, led by vocalist Tony Lindsay.
