MercyMe

MercyMe’s story is webbed in the personal journey of its lead singer, Bart Millard. His life experiences laid the foundation for the larger band’s impact on Christian music. Bart’s walk started with the loss of his father. This tragic event happened during his college freshman year, a rather pivotal occurrence that took him on a spiritual quest that sought meaning amidst grief.

He found refuge in Christian faith, and, encouraged by his youth pastor, relocated to Lakeland, Florida. It was here that he became involved in leading a local praise group, where he developed passion for music as a means of worship and expression. 

His aspirations took flight when he crossed paths with keyboardist Jim Bryson in 1994. In each other’s company, they went on a ministerial journey, one that crossed paths with musical exploration. Together, they traveled Europe as part of a praise team. 

By the end of 1994, Millard and Bryson had switched base to Oklahoma. It was in this city they met and were joined by guitarist Mike Scheuchzer. This association laid the foundation for what would eventually become MercyMe. 

The music took the group to Dallas, Texas.  Here, they met and added Nathan Cochran and Robby Shaffer to the fold as bassist and percussionist, respectively. With a more holistic lineup, they began making waves in the local music scene. Together, they played at over 200 shows a year and honed their sound to distinction. 

MercyMe’s Discographic Achievements

The band's breakthrough came with the release of Almost There in August 2001. The work featured the platinum-selling single I Can Only Imagine. The song's widespread success propelled MercyMe to the Christian music forefront, earning them recognition on the mainstream charts.

After the success of Almost There, they continued to push boundaries with albums like Spoken For (2002) and Undone (2004). These put-outs earned them multiple Dove Awards and lent to their position as genre pioneers. Their ability to blend elements of rock, pop, and worship music set them apart and attracted a diverse, devoted fan base.

In 2010, MercyMe released their first-ever concept album, titled The Generous Mr. Lovewell. The body of work debuted at number three on the overall album charts. It also produced three number one singles on the Christian charts. Its critical as well as commercial success added to their position as some of the scene’s most influential.

As a religious group, the impact extends beyond music, as one might expect. Their inspirational run was immortalized in the 2018 film adaptation of I Can Only Imagine. What’s more, including an anthology album, I Can Only Imagine: The Very Best of MercyMe, was a retrospective of their career. 

As they continue to evolve, musically and spiritually, MercyMe remains committed to sharing their message of faith, love, and redemption through their sound. 

Upcoming MercyMe Events In 2024

In the coming months, MercyMe will go on their Together Again Tour. With an extensive lineup of events spanning various cities, the Christian band is set to uplift audiences across the nation, spread the good news of Christ, and win people over to God’s kingdom.

Kicking off in Saginaw at the Dow Event Center on October 3rd, the tour launches with a bang. From there, MercyMe takes the stage at the Huntington Center in Toledo on October 4th.  As the campaign unfolds, the band brings their uplifting sound to Huntington, WV, at the Marshall Health Network Arena on October 5th, followed by a performance at the Berglund Center in Roanoke on October 6th. 

Further down the calendar, the convoy makes stops in Estero, at the Hertz Arena on October 10th, and in Tallahassee at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center on October 11th. They proceed to Macon at the Macon Coliseum on October 12th. Afterward, they visit Reading to perform at The Santander Arena on October 17th and at Norfolk’s Chartway Arena at Ted Constant Convocation Center on October 18th. 

If you are in Greenville, you can catch the band at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena on October 19th. This would be followed by a performance at the North Charleston Coliseum in North Charleston on October 20th. Wrapping up the month, the team heads to Bossier City at the Brookshire Grocery Arena on October 25th and returns to their roots in Oklahoma City at the Paycom Center on October 26th. 

One of the tour’s final stops is at the Rio Rancho Events Center in Rio Rancho on October 27th, promising a grand finale to an unforgettable musical journey
