About Southern Jaguars Football

The Southern Jaguars football team has long been the pride of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, representing the city’s Southern University (one of the nation’s leading HBCUs) since 1916. The Jaguars have spent time playing at several different levels throughout their history, with a short stint in NCAA Division II followed by a single year in Division I before moving into NCAA Division I-AA (now FCS), where they have remained to this day. The team has seen considerable success over the years at both the conference and national level (in the Black College Football National Championship), winning 19 conference titles as well as 9 claimed and 2 unclaimed Black College Football National Championships (the most recent coming in 2003). The Jaguars can also boast numerous alumni who went on to play in the NFL, including three inductees into the Pro Football Hall of Fame (Mel Blount, Aeneas Williams, Harold Carmichael). Along with their excellent performance in conference and inter-conference games, the Jaguars also have a great record in Bowl games, at 8-3 overall. The team is also known for having three huge rivalries with other HBCUs, including against the Grambling State Tigers, whom the Jaguars defeated 27-22 in the final game of the season in 2023. The Jaguars also beat their other rivals the Texas Southern Tigers in overtime 23-17, though they lost the Boombox Classic against the Jackson State Tigers by a score of 27-14.
