Ultra Music Festival

Each year, the world of electronic dance music, all roads lead to Bayfront park in Miami, where the Ultra Music Festival comes to town. One of the world’s premiere music events, it entertains thousands of fans on-site, as well as millions via live streaming. The position has been earned with years’ worth of hard work, fine-tuning and artist relationships.

With its silver jubilee looming (come 2025), the festival is a pillar of Miami’s economy, as it has provided a boom rivaled by only a few. Per the city’s mayor, Francis Suarez, its 24-year tenure has generated more than $1 billion in revenue for the city, including impacts to close-by restaurants, boutiques and other retail, service industry ventures.

Since its establishment in 1999, Ultra Music Festival has become a favorite when it comes to electronic music, captivating audiences with electrifying performances and productions. Founded by Russell Faibisch, Alex Omes and Ray Navarro, its first edition took place on March 13th, 1999 in Collins Park, Miami Beach.

Though the event faced lots of financial drawbacks, it managed to showcase the best of talents, the likes of Rabbit in the Moon and Paul van Dyk, effectively setting the stage for what went on to become an annual extravaganza. In the following years, the fest saw exponential growth and transformation.

By 2001, the occasion was relocated to the Bayfront Park, where it featured some renowned artists such as Tiësto and Armin van Buuren. In 2005, Carl Cox and Friends Arena was introduced, marking a historic moment and solidifying its status and a must-attend.

As attendance went up the roof, the event shifted ground to the Bicentennial Park in 2006, where it was able to accommodate more than 50,000 guests in the following day using a two-day schedule. Here, the lineup was expanded to welcome crossover acts, including the Black Eyed Peas and The Prodigy (in 2009), helping it attract an even more diverse audience.

Retaining Momentum

In 2012, the Bicentennial Park was undergoing construction, necessitating the event to return to the park for the first time since 2005. Here, it was sold out during its pre-sale. This also marked the first year Ultra Miami Festival delivered its now iconomic live streaming, as a way to ensure that fans from across the world can tune in from the comfort of their homes.

With continued growth in popularity, 2013 was the first time the festival was held across two weekends, at the time coinciding with what was then the final performance by the Swedish House Mafia. Ever since, the festival endured several complaints from city officials and residents due to various disturbances from attendees, leading to its relocation to Virginia Key Beach Park in 2019.

However, after the first hosting at the new venue, it became evident that travel accommodations, among other factors, proved less than ideal. Because of the deficit, it was permitted to return to Bayfront Park for its 2020 edition. While expectations ran high for this, the coronavirus pandemic forced its cancellation not only in 2020 but also in 2021.

In a fortunate turnaround, the festival finally came back in 2022, with the return of Hardwell, who broke his self-imposed hiatus to highlight an incredible weekend-long music fiesta.

Electronic Dance Music’s Biggest Names

The allure of Ultra Music Festival goes beyond its choice of venue. It thrives on the support of a dedicated fan base, who year after year flock to the event in droves to see their favorite artists deliver awesome performances. Since its inception, the event has featured an impressive roster of EDM icons, including David Guetta, Armin van Buuren and Deadmau5.

These artists have been repeat performers at its stage, holding audiences spellbound with their infectious beats and infectious stage presence. On its own, the event’s mainstage has recorded more than 70,000 in attendance, testament to the fest’s magnetic pull and fervent fanatic devotion.

On the back of its programming, Ultra Music Festival has showcased artists from a diversity of genres. In 2009, it welcomed the Manchester rock band known as The Whip, alongside global music acts that did well to add another dimension to the lineup and broaden the performance appeal.

One of the event’s most memorable moments was in 2018 when the Swedish House Mafia reunited to stomp the yard. Following a 5-year dry spell, the trio staged Ultra’s set, literally sending shockwaves of excitement through the crowd and stirring speculation regarding the reunion marking the start of something spectacular.

Indeed, shortly after making an appearance at Ultra, Swedish House Mafia went on their Save The World Reunion Tour, resuming their habit of delighting their fans worldwide with their electric energy. This showed that the event’s fan enthusiasm contributes to imbuing it with atmospheric energy.
