Home Teams: LA Galaxy (MLS)
Located in the Los Angeles suburb of Carson on the campus of California State University, Dominguez Hills (about 14 miles south of downtown Los Angeles), Dignity Health Sports Park has been home to the LA Galaxy, one of the founding teams of the MLS, since 2003. Incredibly, the Galaxy spent their early years playing in the colossal Rose Bowl, a venue that was far from ideal in terms of size (too big), location (inconvenient), and design, so the team’s move to Dignity Health Sports Park was met with great enthusiasm. As the third largest soccer-specific stadium in the MLS, Dignity Health Sports Park provided a much-needed venue to showcase the many international superstars that the Galaxy brought to Los Angeles in the 2000s, starting, of course, with their audacious signing of Real Madrid Galactico David Beckham in 2007. The Galaxy, however, moved into the new stadium in 2003 with a lot to live up to, having won their first ever MLS Cup in 2002 along with their second Supporters’ Shield (and a runners-up performance in the US Open Cup). It took a couple of seasons, but the Galaxy came through again in 2005, squeaking into the MLS Playoffs but going on to defeat the New England Revolution 1-0 to win their second MLS Cup. Beckham’s arrival brought the expectation of more success, but while the team finished first in the Western conference three years running and won the Supporters’ Shield twice. It was not until 2011 that the team won a third MLS Cup, however, with Becks providing the assist for Landon Donovan’s winning goal in a 1-0 victory over the Houston Dynamo. They would meet the Dynamo again in the 2012 MLS Cup Final, with Beckham bowing out of his MLS career a winner as the Galaxy stormed to a 3-1 victory. Since then, the Galaxy have won two more titles to set a league record with five MLS Cups (and 9 total MLS Cup Final appearances), though their struggles in recent years have had their fans looking across the city enviously at the success of interloping upstart rivals Los Angeles FC (the two teams have already developed a fantastic rivalry dubbed El Trafico, by someone with an insider’s knowledge of the city’s highways). LA Galaxy fans nonetheless remain loyal to their team, however, dreaming of a return to glory, with supporters groups the Galaxians, Angel City Brigade, LA Riot Squad, and Galaxy Outlawz generating much of the atmosphere at Galaxy games. Hungry visitors at Dignity Health Sports Park will find no shortage of savory snacks, with everything from falafel and street tacos to cheeseburgers and the Long Bone BBQ Sandwich on the menu. There is also a Benihana on the premises serving up Hibachi steak, chicken, and shrimp. Excellent craft beer is also readily available. For some sweet LA Galaxy swag, head to one of the venue’s many shops and kiosks.
As well as LA Galaxy soccer games, Dignity Health Sports Park has also hosted many international soccer matches, particularly featuring the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team. In 2003, the stadium was one of the main venues for the Women’s World Cup, hosting the Final (which the U.S. Women's Team unfortunately missed out on, finishing third). The stadium has also staged rugby and lacrosse games as well as boxing and MMA/UFC events. The venue has been the site of many concerts featuring international stars such as ENHYPEN, Taylor Swift, the Jonas Brothers, Poncho Sanchez, Slick Rick, blink-182, Panic! At the Disco, Imagine Dragons, Kanye West, David Guetta, Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj, and many more, as well as music festivals like Wango Tango, KROQ Weenie Roast, and the Vans Warped Tour.
No concerts or music festivals have been scheduled to be held at BMO Stadium in 2024 yet, but this is highly likely to change. Keep checking back on TicketX for updates!
