Home Teams: Baylor Bears (NCAA College Basketball)
The Foster Pavilion is a brand new state of the art facility opened in 2024 in Waco, Texas, on the grounds of Baylor University. The Pavilion’s principal function is to provide a home for the Baylor Bears men’s and women’s basketball teams along with a range of other local events. The steep sides of this stadium were designed to give all fans a superb view of the action on the floor and to bring the crowd closer to the players, thus bolstering the home team (and perhaps intimidating the opposition). Opening games in the new Foster Pavilion have augured well for the Bears as well, with the men winning their first game 98-79 over Cornell Big Red and women defeating the TCU Horned Frogs by a score of 71-50. Long a rather unknown regional team (despite one NCAA runner-up finish way back in 1948), the Baylor Bears men’s basketball has been a remarkable success story in recent years, rebounding from a string of unfortunate scandals in the early 2000s to forge a team that qualified for eleven NCAA postseason March Madness tournament, progressing through to five Sweet 16 appearances, three Elite 8 appearances, and one Final Four appearance since 2010. The Bears made that one Final Four appearance count, not only defeating the Houston Cougars 78-59 in the semifinal but stunning the undefeated Gonzaga Bulldogs by a score of 86-70 in the final to hoist their school’s first-ever men’s NCAA basketball championship. Star players from the Bears have also moved on to play in the NBA, such as Vinnie Johnson, David Weasley, Terry Teagle, and Davion Mitchell. While overshadowed for many years by the school’s football program, the Bears basketball team’s recent successes, coupled with their new home arena, have started to draw in bigger crowds, including the student supporters section known as the Bear Pit. The basketball team has also mimicked the football team’s tradition of BlackOut nights where fans all wear black shirts for a spectacular visual effect. As well as Bears basketball games, the Foster Pavilion is slated to hold other events in future as part of its deal with the local municipality, who provided some of its funding for its construction. The nature of these events is still in the process of being determined, so be sure to check back to find out what kind of exciting concerts, sporting competitions, and performances will be held at the Foster Pavilion. Hungry visitors to the Foster Pavilion will find tasty snacks in the concessions such as cheeseburgers, nachos, Chick-fil-A sandwiches, and waffle potato fries. For Bears merchandise, check out any of the shops and kiosks at Foster Pavilion or around campus.
