Long a relatively unknown regional team (apart from one NCAA runner-up finish way back in 1948), the Baylor Bears basketball program has been a remarkable success story in recent years, rebounding from a series of unsavory scandals in the early 2000s to produce a team that has qualified for eleven NCAA postseason March Madness tournaments since 2010, progressing through to five Sweet 16 rounds, three Elite 8 rounds, and one Final Four. That appearance in the Final Four, in 2021, was one that the Bears took full advantage of, not only smashing the Houston Cougars 78-59 in the semifinal but stunning the undefeated and heavily favored Gonzaga Bulldogs by a score of 86-70 in the NCAA championship final to bring home Baylor’s first-ever men’s NCAA basketball championship. The team has also seen Bears alumni move on to star in the NBA, including as Vinnie Johnson, David Weasley, Terry Teagle, and Davion Mitchell. Following the incredible triumph of 2021, the team has continued to build on this success, winning their conference in 2022 and appearing in both the 2022 and 2023 editions of the March Madness tournaments. The Bears basketball program also received a boost in early 2024 from the completion of the sparkling new Foster Pavilion to house their home games. The new venue seemed to immediately augur well for the Bears’ future, with the men winning their first game 98-79 over Cornell Big Red and women defeating the TCU Horned Frogs by a score of 71-50. Bears fans will be heading into the years ahead expecting big things on the hardwood!
While the Foster Pavilion is a beautiful state of the art modern facility, its capacity is somewhat limited by NCAA standards at just 7,500. Given the Bears‘ earth-shattering victory in 2021 and the national recognition that has gone with it coupled with intense local pride in the team means that many home games are sold out well in advance. Tickets can be hard to come by, particularly for postseason tournament games, key conference deciders, or rivalry matchups (see below). The Baylor Bears basketball team have always had local rivalries with many of the other teams in Texas such as the TCU Horned Frogs (the two schools have played one another since 1908), Texas Tech Red Raiders, Houston Cougars, and Texas Longhorns. Burgeoning Big 12 Conference rivalries with the Oklahoma Sooners, West Virginia Mountaineers, Kansas Jayhawks, and Kansas State Wildcats have also intensified in recent years as Baylor has become more of a force to be reckoned with. There is also something of a rivalry developing between Baylor and Gonzaga ever since the Bears defeated the Bulldogs in the 2021 NCAA championship final.
Because the brand new Foster Pavilion was built with steep sides and superb acoustics, fans all over the arena get fantastic views of the action on the floor while being able to make their voices well and truly heard. By bringing the crowd closer to the players, it was felt that the crowd could better bolster the home team (and intimidate the opposition) to give the Bears more of a home court advantage. The student supporters section, known as the Bear Pit, fully lives up to its name and the football team’s tradition of BlackOut nights where fans all wear black shirts for a spectacular visual effect has been carried over to basketball too.
