The Ole Miss Rebels football team have represented the University of Mississippi (lovingly known as Ole Miss) for the better part of 130 years, with the team’s earliest beginnings in 1893. While the Rebels spent their first half-century or so as a rather unremarkable and (nationally) unknown Southern team, things changed in a hurry after the end of World War II under new head coach Johnny Vaught (whose name still lives in the name of the stadium), who, in his very first season at Ole Miss) led the Rebels to their first ever conference title as well as first Bowl game victory. In the course of his 23 years in charge, the team would record 5 more conference triumphs and three claimed national titles. The previously vacant Ole Miss trophy case also began to fill up with Bowl championships, with 10 Bowl victories under Vaught including 1 Cotton Bowl, 6 Sugar Bowls, 2 Liberty Bowls, and a Gator Bowl. Since those days, the Rebels have leveled off quite a bit, remaining fairly competitive in their conference but never quite managing to finish on top again. They have fared better in Bowl games, leading to an excellent 25-15 all-time Bowl record.
The Ole Miss Rebels have legions of loyal supporters from across their state and around the South who make long treks to come to games. This creates a fantastic atmosphere inside Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, but also makes landing a ticket tricky, especially for Bowl games, crucial conference title deciders, or rivalry matchups (see below). The Ole Miss Rebels have a long list of rivalries, but at the top of that list has to be their old state rivals, the Mississippi State Bulldogs. Known as the Battle for the Golden Egg (or Egg Bowl, for short), the rivalry is not only a grudge match but frequently has conference, playoff, or Bowl implications attached to it as well as pride. Ole Miss holds the all-time advantage at 64–46–6 but recent years have been far more competitive, with a roughly even split since the turn of the millennium. The game is frequently played on Thanksgiving Day, earning it a large US television audience. The Rebels also have long-standing rivalries with the LSU Tigers (Magnolia Bowl), Arkansas Razorbacks, Alabama Crimson Tide, Auburn Tigers, and Memphis Tigers (quite the list of potent adversaries!).
The passion of Ole Miss fans has been famed for many years, but the nature of that support has evolved considerably in recent decades. The Rebels name stems, of course, from the days of Dixie, the Confederacy of the American Civil War, and much of the team’s previous pageantry was caught up in nostalgia for this controversial history, with many of the chants, flags, and even official marching band songs at games being blatant Confederate symbols (as well as the mascot). In the face of increased condemnation from all quarters and difficulties for the team in recruiting black athletes, the university eventually took action, banning certain traditions at games in order to gradually shift the culture over time. The team has kept the name Rebels, however, as the general connotations of independence and toughness were felt to outweigh any historical associations. These days, fans of all backgrounds can be seen both outside gathering for tailgating parties and in the stadium, clad in their red and navy blue, gleefully belting out “Forward Rebels” to cheer on Ole Miss.
