Known simply as the Auditorium Theater at the onset of its existence, the West Herr Auditorium Theater dates back to the wee 1920s, at which time it was part of the Masonic building complex. The building initially operated as the RKO Palace Theater, at least until it was shuttered in 1964.
After its closure, the Rochester Organ Society bought the theater’s Wurlitzer pipe organ. After the original organ was relocated to a local church, the newly purchased one was installed in the center. Subsequently, the sale of the complex by the Masons was followed by the Rochester Broadway Theater League acquiring the complex’s auditorium.
The purchase dawned a new era for the venue, as it transformed it into a performing arts and cultural events hub in Rochester and its environs. Several years later, the Center hosted many performances, from Broadway shows to concerts, dance recitals, and community gatherings.
In August 2023, the Rochester Broadway Theater League struck a partnership with West Herr Automotive Group, seeing to the auditorium complex being renamed the West Herr Performing Arts Center.
Today, on stepping into the auditorium, visitors are welcome by a grand foyer embellished with ornate details. The intricate molding reminisces its early 20th-century origins, while the auditorium at large is sophisticated with plush seating, impeccable acoustics, and a majestic stage.
On the outside is a facade that has undergone remarkable transformation, having married its historic heritage with contemporary design elements. Sleek finishings and a visual spectacle beckons on passersby. Ultra-modern lighting fixtures and landscaping accents enhance its allure.
The Center hosts an array of events, including Broadway productions, concerts, dance performances, comedy shows, and community events.
