Beres Hammond is a Jamaican reggae and lovers rock singer born Hugh Beresford Hammond on August 28, 1955, in Annotto Bay, Saint Mary, Jamaica — the ninth of ten children. Growing up listening to his father's collection of American soul and jazz — including Sam Cooke and Otis Redding — and native Jamaican ska and rocksteady, particularly Alton Ellis, he began competing in talent contests in 1972. In 1975 he joined the reggae-R&B fusion outfit Zap Pow as lead singer, scoring the 1978 hit "The System," while simultaneously pursuing a solo career with his debut album Soul Reggae (1976). After leaving Zap Pow in 1979 he founded his own Harmony House label in 1985, releasing the major Jamaican hit "What One Dance Can Do." He was awarded the Order of Jamaica in 2013, and his 2018 album Never Ending also topped the Billboard Reggae Albums chart upon release.
