Creighton Bluejays’ games are always big news in Omaha, Nebraska, with no other college or semi-professional teams in the city reaching anywhere near the national profile of this plucky basketball team from Creighton University. The Bluejays have long punched above their weight in their conference, qualifying 23 times for the national NCAA March Madness postseason tournament and winning first round games on frequent occasions. The team has made it to the Sweet 16 Sweet 16 on five occasions (most recently in 2021 and 2023), the Elite 8 on two occasions, and came agonizingly close to a first-ever Final Four in 2023, when they lost an agonizing 57-56 nailbiter to the San Diego State Aztecs. Recent successes at Creighton have occurred under head coach Greg McDermott, who has been with the team since 2010, at one time coaching his own son Doug, who now plays in the NBA. McDermott has turned down offers from other schools to remain in his job at Creighton. Since the early 2000s, the Bluejays have played in the CHI Health Center’s large new arena, allowing the team to attract crowds of over 18,000 fans, which it frequently does thanks to the team’s legacy of success and the popularity of basketball as a sport in Omaha. Fans frequently drive long distances to come to home games and some travel even further afield to away games and NCAA March Madness matchups as well. Fortunately for Creighton fans this year, CHI Health Center is set to host First and Second Round games of 2024 March Madness, meaning that (hopefully!) they will be able to see the Bluejays win two postseason games at home and proceed on into the later rounds of the tournament. Anyone who gets the chance to go see a Creighton Bluejays game live should definitely do so. It is an experience that you won’t soon forget!
The Creighton Bluejays have a major in-state rivalry with the Nebraska Cornhuskers, who play out of the city of Lincoln, no more than an hour’s drive from Omaha. Opposition fans frequently make the drive to their rivals’ arenas, making this a rivalry that reverberates through the stands as well as out on the court. Despite the Bluejays being the more successful team in general, the series between the two has been fairly evenly contested overall, with Creighton owning a slender advantage at 29-26 (but dominating in recent years). Interestingly, because Creighton does not have a college football team anymore, many people from Omaha actually support the Cornhuskers football team.
With so much success at the conference and national levels along with top players who have gone on to play in the NBA, it is no wonder that the Creighton Bluejays have attracted many fans from around the state of Nebraska and further abroad over the years. Fans of the Bluejays frequently log long miles in their cars traveling home and away to see their beloved team in action. While this makes for an incredible atmosphere at Creighton games, it can also render tickets hard to come by, especially for key conference games or rivalry matchups (see above). Tickets to postseason March Madness tournament games are in even higher demand.
