The San Diego Aztecs basketball team were for many decades little more than an obscure regional team. The Aztecs did not even join Division 1 until 1969 and had made just 3 appearances in the NCAA March Madness postseason basketball tournament when the year 2000 rolled by. Things changed with the turn of the millennium, however, since which the Aztecs have not only qualified for 12 March Madness tournaments but also progressed to the Sweet 16 on 3 occasions. Last year, in 2022-23, the Aztecs not only won their conference title but also took the 2023 March Madness tournament by storm, surprising college hoops fans all over America by progressing all the way to the Final Four. There, they squeaked past fellow upstarts the Florida Atlantic Owls by a score of 72-71 to reach the NCAA championship final. Unfortunately for the Aztecs, they found themselves facing the powerful UConn Huskies, who were in no mood for Cinderella stories and defeated the Aztecs by a score of 76–59. Nevertheless, the run to the final was a huge accomplishment that put the Aztecs basketball program firmly on the radar of college basketball fans everywhere. The Aztecs fans, no doubt multiplying after the heights of last year, will be hoping that 2023 was no flash in the pan and will be hoping for their team to take one more step and bring home a title in the years to come.

The San Diego State Aztecs’ main local rivals are the USD Toreros and UNLV Rebels, though results against both are historically quite one-sided in favor of the Aztecs. The Aztecs also have a long-standing rivalry with the BYU Cougars, but this has cooled off in recent years as the two teams no longer play regularly.
Fans in San Diego were really galvanized by their team’s successes during the incredible season of 2023, not only selling out the Viejas Arena but even traveling in considerable numbers to away games and March Madness tournament matchups. No doubt this momentum will carry into 2024 and beyond, with expectations for the Aztecs riding high.
