Son Volt is an American alternative country and Americana band formed in 1994 by vocalist and guitarist Jay Farrar following the breakup of the seminal alternative country band Uncle Tupelo, which he co-led with Jeff Tweedy. While Tweedy went on to form Wilco, Farrar assembled Son Volt with original Uncle Tupelo drummer Mike Heidorn and brothers Jim (bass) and Dave Boquist (guitar, fiddle, banjo, steel guitar), signing to Warner Bros. Records. The band's critically acclaimed debut album Trace (1995) is widely regarded as one of the greatest albums in the alt-country movement, featuring the songs "Windfall" and "Drown," the latter reaching number ten on the mainstream rock charts. Two more albums followed — Straightaways (1997) and Wide Swing Tremolo (1998) — before Son Volt went on hiatus. Farrar revived the band in 2005 with an entirely new lineup, releasing Okemah and the Melody of Riot. The band has since released albums including American Central Dust (2009), Honky Tonk (2013), Notes of Blue (2017), Union (2019), Electro Melodier (2021), and Day of the Doug (2023), a tribute to Texas troubadour Doug Sahm. Their most recent release is Sound Signal Serenades (2026), issued for Record Store Day. The current lineup consists of Farrar alongside Mark Spencer, Andrew DuPlantis, John Horton, and Mark Patterson.
