The Starting Line is a pop-punk band based out of Philadelphia that formed in Churchville, Pennsylvania in 1999. The group came together when guitarist Matt Watts sent emails to people in an AOL member directory who looked to have similar bands, asking if they were interested in jamming. Vocalist and bassist Kenny Vasoli, who was 14 at the time, was the only one who answered. The pair gathered two other bandmates, jammed, and wrote a couple of songs. After that, they started booking shows and touring under the name Sunday Drive. They sold home-made merchandise and self-recorded cassettes. The group changed their name when they heard Sunday Drive was taken by a Christian rock band. They changed to the Starting Line, which had no meaning to them, but was the only name they could all agree on. Their debut EP was released in 2001 followed by their first full-length album the next year.
