Wednesday is an American alternative rock band formed in Asheville, North Carolina, in 2017 as a solo project by vocalist and guitarist Karly Hartzman, who taught herself guitar after seeing the band Palberta perform at a show while attending the University of North Carolina Asheville. The band's current lineup consists of Hartzman alongside MJ Lenderman (guitar), Xandy Chelmis (pedal steel), Alan Miller (drums), and Ethan Baechtold (bass). Known for a sound described as "country-gaze" or "twang-gaze" — a blend of shoegaze, noise rock, grunge, and alt-country built around Hartzman's candid storytelling about life in the American South — Wednesday released their debut album yep definitely in 2018 and signed to Orindal Records. After Twin Plagues (2021) put them on the global indie-rock map, the band signed to Dead Oceans and released their fifth studio album Rat Saw God on April 7, 2023, which received an 8.8 from Pitchfork and was named Best New Music. Their sixth studio album Bleeds, produced by Alex Farrar and described by Hartzman as the "spiritual successor to Rat Saw God," was released on September 19, 2025, on Dead Oceans. MJ Lenderman, Hartzman's partner and the band's lead guitarist, has also pursued a celebrated solo career on Dead Oceans.
