Jack Breslin Student Events Center Events

The Jack Breslin Student Events Center, located in the small Michigan college town of East Lansing, is home to the Michigan State Spartans men’s and women’s basketball teams and volleyball teams. While the facility was originally constructed in 1989, major renovations were undertaken in 2016 to modernize its infrastructure and add a Hall of History to memorialize the university’s past basketball triumphs. Unlike most American Division 1 colleges where either football or basketball tends to dominate as the more successful sport, the Michigan State Spartans have had plenty of success on both the hardwood and the gridiron over the years. While competitive from time to time in their early years, the Spartans men’s basketball team really hit their stride in the late 1970s when, led by one of the greatest basketball players of all time in Earvin “Magic” Johnson, the team stormed to an Elite 8 appearance in 1978, where they were knocked out by the Kentucky Wildcats. Magic would power the Spartans back into the NCAA postseason March Madness tournament in 1979 where the team would go all the way to the championship final, where they came up against Magic’s fellow future NBA great Larry Bird’s Indiana State Sycamores, who were undefeated heading into the game. In front of the largest TV audience ever to watch a college basketball game, the Spartans defeated the favored Sycamores 75–64 to win their first NCAA title with Magic selected as player of the tournament (he would leave university later that year to go pro with the Los Angeles Lakers, with whom he immediately won an NBA title!). The 1999-2000 Spartans team would repeat this feat when they bested the Florida Gators 89-76 to bring Michigan State its second NCAA title. As well as the legendary Magic, other top Spartans players went on to star in the NBA, including Zach Randolph, Jason Richardson, Steve Smith, and Draymond Green. Game nights at the Jack Breslin Student Events Center are always big events. Students, alumni, and local hoops fans pack the stands of the arena in their thousands, roaring their team on to victory. As well as Spartans basketball and volleyball games, the Jack Breslin Student Events Center hosts high school sports championships, graduation ceremonies, and career fairs. As one of the largest indoor stadiums in the region, it is also a popular venue for everything from monster truck events to circuses to large concerts featuring major acts like Aerosmith, Pearl Jam, Kenny Chesney, and Shania Twain. Major comedy acts like Dave Chappelle and Kevin Hart have also played the venue. Hungry visitors to the Jack Breslin Student Events Center will find many tasty treats at the venue’s concessions, including Kowalski hotdogs, fresh sub sandwiches, and handmade smoothies, along with nice cold beer. Those interested in Spartans merchandise can head to the many shops and kiosks at the Jack Breslin Student Events Center or around campus.
