The West Virginia Mountaineers men’s basketball team were long serious contenders in American college basketball, consistently qualifying for NCAA March Madness postseason tournaments throughout the 1950s and 60s. The Mountaineers even came within one point of being NCAA champions in 1959, when they lost the title game to the Cal Bears by a heartbreaking score of 71-70. The team’s fortunes faded for a while in the 1970s and 80s, but the team has undergone something of a resurgence in recent years, appearing 8 times in the Sweet 16 round and twice in the Elite 8 round of the March Madness tournament since 1998. The Mountaineers even made it back to the Final Four in 2010, falling to the Duke Blue Devils in the semifinals. In 2023, the team was knocked out in the first round of March Madness by the Maryland Terrapins in a tight fought 67-65 game. No doubt Mountaineers fans will be hoping to see their team push further into the tournament in 2024 and the years to come.
