Hailing from Chesapeake, Virginia, Nate Smith is widely known for his ability to lead jazz gigs on drums, compositions, and production. Also known as Duncan, he is famous for working with Dave Holland and Chris Potter among others, and also responsible for some of the most recent pop R&B soundtracks.
Influenced by various acts like Earth, Wind & Fire, and Art Blakey, Smith’s musical began quite early. The jazz luminary, Betty Carter, eventually gave the young musician a chance to play with her. Smith completed his artist repertoire by joining Holland’s Quintet in 2003 and Potter’s Underground in 2004.
Nate Smith, a versatile musician and educator, collaborated with renowned artists like Ravi Coltrane and Lionel Loueke. He taught at prestigious programs like Betty Carter's Jazz Ahead and the Thailand International Jazz Conference.
He established Waterbaby Music, his record label, in 2008, releasing his debut album Workday, Waterbaby Music, Vol. 1.0. In 2017, he launched Kinfolk: Postcards from Everywhere, a fusion masterpiece blending jazz, funk, rock, and soul.
Praised by NPR as a nomadic jazz exploration, the Virginian’s musical journey spans two decades, and his dedication to music and teaching continues to inspire audiences worldwide.
Despite being one of the unconventional acts in the music industry, Nate Smith has quite a busy performance itinerary. He is not touring but has shows to appear on, including a May 27th groove at Denver’s Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom, where he will be rocking alongside Kiefer & Carrtoons.
Then, on May 23rd, he'll be at the Rehoboth Beach's Bottle & Cork. After that, he proceeds on May 31st to Cincinnati's Hard Rock Outdoor Arena. This, in turn, will be followed by a performance on June 1st at Oak Grove Racing Gaming and Hotel in Kentucky. With each beat, Smith promises an unmatched experience blending jazz, funk, and soul.
