The NBA Western Conference Semifinals are the round when the NBA Playoffs really start to heat up each spring, bringing together the four teams that have survived the First Round and are desperate to move on to the NBA Western Conference Finals. Contested in two separate best of seven series, the NBA Western Conference Semifinals run in parallel to the NBA Eastern Conference Semifinals, with the overall field having been halved from 16 to 8 teams. This fascinating round of games is when players, coaches, and especially fans really start to think in the back of their minds, “Could this maybe be our year? Could we maybe just go all the way, get to the NBA Finals, and win the NBA Championship?” Whatever happens, the NBA Western Conference Semifinals are sure to provide plenty of drama, with winners knowing that they are just two more steps away from ultimate glory and losers facing a summer of bitter regrets. Games will be fast, furious, and hotly contested. And you can be there in the crowd to witness it all!

After the NBA Regular Season ends on April 14, 2024, there will be a Play-In Tournament from April 16-19. After the conclusion of the Play-In Tournament, the 2024 NBA Playoffs really get going, with the First Round commencing from April 20. Firm dates for the two series of the NBA Western Conference Semifinals and two series of the NBA Eastern Conference Semifinals will be determined after the conclusion of the First Round (as its length can obviously vary). The 2024 NBA Western Conference Semifinals should take place sometime in early to mid-May. They will of course be followed by the NBA Western Conference Finals and NBA Finals. The NBA Finals have already been scheduled for June 6-23, depending on how many games the series runs to.
Please keep checking back on TicketX throughout the NBA Playoffs to view the full 2024 NBA Playoffs schedule, including for the 2024 NBA Western Conference Semifinals, along with all tickets as they become available.
The two 2024 NBA Western Conference Semifinals series will be split between the four home venues of the four competing teams (i.e. the four winners of the NBA Western Conference First Round series). Because the maximum number of games in the 2024 NBA Western Conference Semifinals is an odd number at 7, the team with the better 2023-2024 NBA regular season will host 4 games while their opponents will host 3 games. The sequence is 2-2-1-1-1, with 2 games played at the top seed’s home venue, followed by 2 at the opponents’ home venue, Game 5 back at the top seed’s venue (if necessary), Game 6 at the opponents’ venue (if necessary), and Game 7 at the top seed’s venue (if necessary).
Because the best 8 teams from each Conference (Eastern and Western) qualify for the NBA Playoffs, some teams have already mathematically booked their place either in the 2024 NBA Playoffs or Play-In Tournament. Other teams are still in contention for one of the final spots in the Playoffs or Play-In Tournament (while others are already booking their holidays on a beach somewhere…). The Western Conference playoff picture is now almost set, though some teams may still be eliminated or change in terms of seeding before the 2023-2024 NBA regular season ends on April 14.
Minnesota Timberwolves, Denver Nuggets, Oklahoma City Thunder, Los Angeles Clippers, Dallas Mavericks, Phoenix Suns, New Orleans Pelicans, Sacramento Kings, Los Angeles Lakers, Golden State Warriors, Houston Rockets (currently 11th)
The NBA Western Conference Semifinals are part of the second round of the NBA Playoffs, contested between the eight winners of the NBA First Round. The two winners of the Western Conference Semifinals will progress to the NBA Western Conference Finals and face one another for a chance to become Western Conference Champions and progress to the NBA Finals. Both Western Conference Semifinals are contested as best of seven series, which means that a team requires 4 victories to progress to the NBA Western Conference Finals, so each NBA Conference Semifinals series lasts between 4 games (a sweep) and 7 games. There is nothing as nerve-shredding as a Game Seven decider!
Any NBA Conference Semifinals game that ends in a tie after four quarters will go into overtime. All overtime periods in the NBA Playoffs last five minutes, with the team ahead at the buzzer winning the game. If the score is still tied, the game goes into a second overtime period. The drama!
In the Western Conference, the experts seem to be tipping either the Los Angeles Clippers or Denver Nuggets for a run to the NBA Finals, with few giving the Minnesota Timberwolves any chance despite their first place finish in the conference. The Oklahoma City Thunder will also be looking to storm through the rounds, while the Phoenix Suns may be thinking that this may finally be their year after so many close calls in the past.
Of course, when it comes to the 2024 NBA Playoffs, every team will have exciting star players to watch. For a shortlist from around the league, however, here are just a few to keep your eye on. Top scorers include Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks, Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder, while players such as the Sacramento Kings’ Domantas Sabonis, the Denver Nuggets’ Nikola Jokic, and the Minnesota Timberwolves’ Rudy Gobert. And of course, though his Los Angeles Lakers will have to qualify via the Play-In Tournament, only a fool would completely write off LeBron James in what could be his final season. All that said, part of the fun of the Playoffs is the legends that it creates out of previously unknown or underappreciated players? Who will step up this year? The NBA Playoffs began in the late 1940s with the merger of the BAA and NBL, with its format gradually evolving towards the format that exists today. The Play-In Tournament preceding the main NBA Playoffs was introduced in 2021. Because of the Eastern-Western Conference system, many incredible playoff rivalries have developed over the years in the NBA (particularly in the 1980s and 90s when divisional playoff rounds led to the same teams playing one another almost every year!). For those interested in the history of the NBA Playoffs, a trip to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, MA is a must!
There are currently two teams tied for the most NBA Championships, the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers, who have each won 17 titles as of 2023 (several against one another!). Both teams will be desperate to claim that 18th title to take sole possession of the all-time lead. The NBA has also long been famous for its dynasties, where certain teams rise to the top and dominate for a period of time. While the Celtics may have had the longest dynasty in the league’s earliest years, the most memorable dynasty is probably that of the Chicago Bulls with their run of 6 NBA Championships in 8 years (with two “three-peats”) during the height of Michael Jordan’s power in the 1990s. A close second might be Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal’s Los Angeles Lakers in the early 2000s, followed by the Golden State Warriors in recent years, who have won 4 titles since 2015, three of them against the Cleveland Cavaliers in one of the greatest NBA Finals rivalries. NBA Playoffs games are known for their edge of the seat intensity, where fans sit with hands (and sometimes eyes) clutched tight, praying that their team scores that vital bucket or makes that last crucial stop. As the second round of the NBA Playoffs, the NBA Western Conference Semifinals inevitably ratchet the tension up a notch further than the First Round, with fans and players on both sides well aware that their team is one step closer to glory (but also still just one wrong step away from an early vacation). Basketball fans do everything they can during the NBA Playoffs to inspire their teams, packing the stands, donning team colors, and hollering at the top of their lungs to help create one of the best game day atmospheres in modern day sports.
